Habilitation care can help promote positive emotions and enhance quality of life for residents with advanced dementia, said William Kirkpatrick, LICSW, program director for the Alzheimer's Association's Maine Chapter, on a December 9, 2014, conference call hosted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes. Kirkpatrick emphasized that the program focuses not on recovering lost functions, or rehabilitation, but rather on retaining existing strengths and minimizing limitations.
