OIG: High Use of Psychotropic Drugs, Unsupported Schizophrenia Diagnoses among Nursing Home Residents

What's the news. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General (OIG) found that about 80% of Medicare's long-stay nursing home residents were prescribed a psychotropic drug from 2011 through 2019, and a 194% increase in unsupported schizophrenia diagnoses from 2015 to 2019, according to a November 2022 report.
