Volunteer Provider Not Liable for Child's Death by Volunteer's Vehicle

The second appellate district court of California affirmed summary judgment in favor of the defendant health system in a case centering on the death of a 14-year-old boy. The child died after being struck and killed by the vehicle of a volunteer pet therapist while the volunteer was driving home in his own vehicle after providing pet therapy at an assisted-living facility.
The therapist, who was a volunteer for the health system, drove to the assisted-living facility in his own vehicle and provided pet therapy to a patient there.
