A risk manager recently sought guidance regarding creating a policy on the intake of alcohol for skilled nursing and long-term-care residents.

The many perspectives on serving alcohol in continuing care communities complicate developing effective policies. According to AssistedLiving.com, some policies recommend total prohibition. Other policies state alcohol cannot be served, yet allow it in living spaces; or alcohol can be both served and allowed in living spaces; or alcohol can be served and/or allowed in living spaces with a doctor's note.
