A Continuing Care Risk Management (CCRM) System member recently asked for guidance in establishing a policy for neurologic checks of long-term care residents who have fallen. In our response, we recommend the following:

ECRI Institute has not made a specific recommendation regarding the frequency of postfall neurologic assessments. However, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) fall prevention toolkit makes recommendations for residents who experience either no or minor head trauma; residents with major head trauma are not included in the policy because they would be hospitalized for continuous observation, assessment, and treatment.
