Identifying Potential New Data Sources for Safety

Voluntary reporting provides a source of subjective data that is used to drive patient safety. However, other data exists. Another form of existing data is systems data. Systems data is objective data that results from a transaction within the electronic health record.

How difficult is it to obtain this data? Who has access to this data? How can this data be aggregated? While some organizations are using this data, can those applications be used more broadly?

The Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety undertook a project to investigate answers to these questions.

Review the white paper to learn:

  • What is required to obtain systems data?
  • Can systems data be normalized for aggregation across providers and organizations?
  • How will this information ultimately be used?
