A Texas hospital is investigating one of its nurses after discovering that she posted in an anti-vaccine Facebook group about a patient who tested positive for measles, according to an August 29, 2018, article from ABC News. The post, which has been deleted, said, "I think it's easy for us nonvaxxers to make assumptions but most of us have never and will never see one of theses [sic] diseases . . . For the first time in my career I saw measles this week. Actually most of my coworkers and the ER docs saw measles for the first time as well. And honestly, it was rough. The kid was super sick. Sick enough to be admitted to the ICU [intensive care unit] and he looked miserable. By no means have I changed my vax stance, and I never will. But I just wanted to share my experience and how much worse it was than I expected." Another person took a screenshot of the comments and posted it on the hospital's Facebook page, according to the article. More than 100 people in the United States have been confirmed to have measles this year, the article said. A patient at the hospital did indeed test positive for measles, the hospital told ABC's Houston affiliate. In a statement to ABC, the hospital said, "we know vaccination is the best protection against measles." It further added, "We are also aware that one of our nurses posted information on social media and we take these matters very seriously. A thorough investigation is underway."

HRC Recommends: Healthcare providers and organizations should use multiple strategies, tailored to individual families, to encourage appropriate vaccination of pediatric patients. In addition, they should provide education on the importance of vaccination and ensure convenient access. Providers should seek to understand parents' potential reasons for refusing vaccination and make this an opportunity to combat possible misperceptions.
