On June 27, 2017, ransomware attack Petya was released and started affecting Windows-based operating systems (OS) across the globe. Various media outlets have reported numerous infected organizations, including some hospitals whose IT systems have been impacted.

Some medical devices are based on Windows OS and may be at risk from Petya ransomware. As of this posting on June 29, 2017, ECRI Institute is not aware of any reports of medical devices that are directly impacted. 

ECRI Institute has published a guidance article, Ransomware Attacks: How to Protect Your Medical Device Systems, to aid healthcare facilities in tackling immediate concerns in relation to ransomware like Petya and WannaCry. That article provides general guidance and recommendations applicable to addressing any ransomware and/or other malware.
