The board of directors at an integrated national multi-state health system with managed care health plans, hospitals, and medical practices was considering changes in the way quality improvement data were reported.
The board wanted to make sure that the health system's quality improvement processes were strong and well integrated. They also wanted guidance to help integrate multiple improvement projects successfully throughout the organization.
ECRI Institute performed gap analyses of key quality-related systems such as performance improvement, utilization management, patient safety, risk management, and patient satisfaction. Using the INsight web-based assessment tool, plus on-site feedback from frontline staff, middle management, and leadership, ECRI Institute provided a visual flow of each region’s systems and identified both well-coordinated and disconnected processes.
The health system used assessment results to create a strategic five-year plan for improvements to the quality and patient safety programs in order to support the goal of health system integration. The ogranization developed work plans for each division using INsight results as a baseline to measure improvement efforts. They also reorganized their quality research body to collaborate with and support all other quality systems.
The organization also developed a multi-level electronic dashboard to monitor and report key indicators in the quality, patient safety, and risk programs. The board of directors and executive leadership now have greater confidence that they are meeting their obligations.
