Medical device alarms can signal a warning of medical necessity – but the number of alarms can also be excessive, distracting, and clinically insignificant. Unwarranted alarms often cause caregivers to take unsafe actions, such as turning the alarm volume to an inaudible level or even turning the alarm off, causing a potential clinical alarm hazard.
Since the launch of our Top 10 Health Technology Hazards list, alarms have frequently gotten top billing. Earlier this year, the Joint Commission issued a Sentinel Event Alert on medical device alarms, and recently announced alarm management will become a National Patient Safety Goal.
To help hospitals prepare for the new requirements, ECRI Institute presented the following web conference, “Answering the Call to Alarm Safety: Getting Ready for Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal.”
What you will learn: Who should attend:
  • What hospitals need to do to comply with the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal on alarm management
  • How to use ECRI Institute’s toolkit for complying with the goal
  • The expectations from the Joint Commission
  • Tailoring your policies and procedures from your enterprise to individual care units
  • How technology can help with alarm management
  • Risk managers
  • Clinical staff
  • Nursing administration
  • ICU staff
  • Clinical department heads
  • Clinical and biomedical engineers
  • Materials managers
  • Other healthcare professionals
Bonus! All attendees will receive a sneak peek of the Health Devices article on clinical alarm hazards and ECRI Institute's toolkit for complying with the goal, which will be reviewed at the webinar.
