the worlds leading independent organizations committed to advancing the
quality of healthcare. A nonprofit organization chartered in 1955, ECRI
provides a broad array of services to thousands of hospitals, healthcare
organizations, ministries of health, government and planning agencies, health
plans and insurers, associations, and accrediting agencies worldwide. Our
applied research, publications, databases, and technical assistance programs
are the benchmark for the healthcare community.
Background
ECRI (formerly the Emergency Care Research Institute) has a rich
history of more than 35 years of experience in applied research in healthcare.
Its 1968 study of 18 brands of manually operated resuscitators found nine to be
ineffective and started ECRI down the path it follows today: that of an
independent evaluator and provider of information and guidance. ECRI's
competencies extend to health technology planning, procurement, and management;
patient safety; risk and quality management; health services research; health
technology assessment; and healthcare environmental management. We still run
the preeminent program for laboratory-based brand and model studies of medical
equipment.
Integrity
ECRI maintains strictly enforced conflict-of-interest rules that
help to ensure an unbiased approach to projects. These rules prohibit
investments in or gifts from the medical device and pharmaceutical industries
and apply to ECRI and all staff members. Staff members' income tax returns are
audited for compliance with these rules. ECRI does not accept advertising.
